Perspectives on the wonderful world of tech

Balsamiq Mock Ups – your experiences.

After the success of the Making it Mobile forum last week, we can’t help but get excited about our next event. On the 17th April (18.00-21.00), London, we bring you Peldi of Balsamiq for our next CEO Tales.

He is brilliant – you probably know already! Balsamiq Mockups wireframing tools are used by over 80,000 different companies to help them design gorgeous software with ease. Peldi will be talking about how Balsamiq has become, in a very short time, one of the world’s best loved software companies. He will also be discussing why he thinks too many software businesses are being blinded by metrics when they should be thinking about what their customer is doing.

But what do you think?

We want to hear your stories of how you use Balsamiq and how it has affected your business. Are you a believer or a critic?

In around 50-100 words let us know whether or not Balsamiq makes you happy and why.

Feel 100% free to leave your stories below. We’ll then hand pick the juiciest, invite you to meet the big boss (Peldi), publish them as individual blogs and ask Peldi to discuss them further on stage.

To make sure you don’t miss out on what will be a sell out event, register here, now!

The death of Paywalls has been greatly exaggerated. Now everyone’s doing it…

So The Times, roundly ridiculed by the digerati, and e.g. Techcrunch, for bringing in a Paywall for its content, may not have been so stupid after all.

This week the New York Times announced that its metered ‘frequent user’ Paywall – you pay if you view more than 20 articles per month is being tweaked so that users who view more than 10 articles a month will pay. Widely derided by those in the know when it was implemented, the New York Times now claims half a million subscribers.

Today Mark Challinor, Director of Mobile at the Daily Telegraph Group announced at the BLN Making it Mobile Forum  that it will start charging for some premium content – Premiership Football Highlights for example – on mobile devices via subscriptions at £10 per month. Mark notes that when people pay for content, they value it more.

Publishers have always wanted to believe that people will pay for quality content, the good news is that wish seems to be coming true.

New Olympic Sport – most desperate attempt to associate marketing with the London Olympics

One of the great things about the Olympics and other big sporting and cultural events is that marketing departments across the land get the opportunity to demonstrate just how desperate they can be. The London Olympics will be a source of huge pleasure to any fans of terrible marketing.

I am expecting plenty more of this so intend to award a bronze, silver and gold medal this summer for the most desperate attempt to associate a company with the Olympics through a marketing campaign. Do send any rubbish marketing campaigns you find my way.

Congratulations Aqua London for spamming us with this egregious piece of crap which came as a single jpeg, no text. No clickable links. I did go to your website. It is so unbelievably bad, I am linking to it here so other people can have a laugh too http://www.aqua-london.com My favourite tab is the ‘Hip Happenings’ tab. Not much going on there…

Social media platforms in mobile – how do they make you money?

Gerry Kelliher is Senior Director of UK & Ireland Sales Operations at BlackBerry. In this guest blog Gerry explores how social media and mobile work together to make you money. BlackBerry are supporters of MiM 2012 – a one day forum which brings mobile and business together. MiM 2012 takes place on 22nd March, London. Reserve your place here.

Social media and mobile is a topic notoriously full of hot air and little else. Here, I will cut  through the guff and consider how social media and mobile go hand in hand – and importantly, how it makes you money.

Social media is instant. It means the ability to update and share information now and consumers expect to be able to do this on their terms, in real-time and on the move. There is no way to achieve this other than through the medium of mobile. Gone are the days when we were happy to wait until we were in front of a PC to get those crucial messages sent and received. And we’re in a time where social media goes beyond friends and family: it’s now just as much a key tool across the private and public sector, with Sheffield Police recently using their BlackBerry smartphones to engage with protestors via Twitter.

We can’t ignore the revenue opportunities the popularity of mobile social media presents: the question is, how can we best convert these opportunities?

At RIM, we’ve seen huge growth of the BlackBerry Messenger platform. There are over 55 million active BBM users worldwide, which presents brands and developers alike with a captive audience to target. What’s more is that 70 per cent of BBM users communicate with their contacts daily – it’s a ‘sticky’ service which subscribers are truly engaged in.

Discoverability is key for anyone looking to capitalise on social media via mobile and this is at the heart of the BBM platform. The BlackBerry Social Platform provides developers with the tools to build applications based on social features with established popularity, such as chat and sharing. Developers can create entirely new social apps, integrate social features or connect their apps to BBM. Developers who add the “Invite to Download” or the profile and status update feature have a new social marketing technique integrated into their app.

The uptake that we’ve seen with our 650+ BBM connected apps proves that this kind of integration and social element is central to consumer engagement and long-term revenue success. These ‘connected’ apps have been downloaded almost 140 million times, accounting for over 20 per cent of the daily downloads from BlackBerry App World. When foursquare updated its app to become a BBM Connected app, it saw a record-breaking 200,000 downloads in just one day.

If you’re thinking social mobile media monetisation, think integration – bringing the users into the experience will be critical to driving long-term, sustainable revenue streams.

MiM 2012 brings together retailers, brands, media businesses with companies and investors delivering mobile today to discuss how you can make your business mobile today. No sales pitches, no irrelevant future gazing, no time wasters – just insightful talks from those leading the mobile charge and top quality networking. There are only a 4 tickets left so reserve your place here or get in touch to find out more.

“I want”, sometimes, does get.

Anything You Want – Derek Sivers

They say that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. Yet the cover for this book, which shows the thrilled face of a young boy buried neck deep in the sand, is the perfect preface to Sivers’ writing style and the essence of his message:

do what you love and keep it real.

There’s nothing particularly revelatory about Sivers’ advice, but for the 21st century entrepreneur it is as essential as listening to the timeworn truths of your granddad. Anything You Want is Sivers’ manifesto on creating and keeping happy customers. He presents an honest and down-to-earth recap of the formation of his own project, CD Baby, highlighting some important lessons he learnt along the way. These include the art of saying “no”, hiring, firing, expanding, shipping squid and all things in between. He smashes the stereotype that is often assigned to entrepreneurship and reminds even the least businessy types that if you want to make something good to better this world, it is only fear and soulless distraction (money) that stand in your way. Hm, big only.

What really marks it out from other business books is, quite frankly, it’s fun to read. You can read it in an hour, perfect for that train journey you’ve booked next week. And that front cover could start some interesting conversations…

Anything You Want - Derek Sivers
