How SaaS and the cloud is transforming technology in Financial Services.  Discussion and networking drinks.

Join some of the people who are changing the way we think about technology in Financial Services. Meet senior people from banks including HSBC, UBS, Lloyds TSB, Bank of America, M&G, The Currency Cloud and Credit Suisse, emerging technology providers including Rackspace, Salesforce, Huddle, Mimecast and Symantec , and venture and private equity investors including Highland Capital, Eden Ventures, GE Capital for an evening of discussion, debate and drinks networking.

Thanks to generous support from Erevena Executive Search and Rackspace, there is no charge to attend this event.

Eventbrite - CEO Tales - SaaS in the City

Format: 6-9pm. Drinks networking, panel discussion and audience Q&A, drinks networking.

Speakers:

  • Chris Swan, CTO, Client Experience, UBS.
  • Ali Mitchell, CEO, Huddle.
  • Darshan Chandarana, Global Lead, Financial services Strategy, Salesforce.

Our panel will offer their views on why the City has embraced SaaS businesses in such a short space of time, key industry trends, successful sales strategies for SaaS businesses and how to overcome the blocks to adoption in larger enterprises. SaaS and the City is an event for the people that are driving change in the financial services industry – buyers, vendors and thought leaders – to discuss the challenges they face in a fast moving industry.

Even two years ago, there was a high degree of skepticism in the financial services industry and banking sector in particular that SaaS based solutions were ‘right’ for such complex, regulated and security conscious environments. “I’m fine with our sales teams having SalesForce but it’s hard to see how it is going to get much further into the organisation than that without addressing some serious issues for us”, said one global banking CIO. How the world changed.

This CEO Tales will consider how much progress SaaS solutions have made in the financial services sector, where they are being adopted most rapidly, the major blocks to SaaS adoption and cloud computing more widely.

About the speakers:

Chris Swan, CTO Client Experience, UBS. SaaS in the CityChris Swan, CTO Client Experience UBS: Chris concentrates on strategy and architecture for web and mobile offerings across all regions and business divisions. He was previously co-head of Security CTO focussing on identity management, access control and data security. Chris represents UBS as a Director on the Steering Committee of the Open Data Center Alliance (ODCA), an industry association focussed on enterprise adoption of cloud computing. Before joining UBS he was CTO at a London based technology investment banking boutique, which operated a cloud only IT platform. Chris previously held various senior R&D, architecture and engineering positions at Credit Suisse, which included networks, security, data centre automation and introduction of new application platforms.

Alastair Mitchell HuddleAlastair Mitchell, CEO Founder, Huddle: Alastair founded Huddle in 2006 after being frustrated by the inability of existing enterprise technology to help people collaborate. Spending millions on a SharePoint implementation, to watch it fail dismally, was the final straw. Since 2006, Alastair has grown Huddle to more than 200 people in London, San Francisco, New York and Washington DC. Sales have tripled year on year and Huddle has raised $40M in funding.  Alastair’s career has followed the trajectory of the internet. He built the first global soft commodities marketplace. When the business was bought, Alastair moved to Dunnhumby and led its marketing intelligence product from $0-$60 million sales in 4 years. He joined the board in 2005 to run a 300 person global team. When Dunhumby was purchased by Tesco, Alastair started Huddle. Alastair has an MEng in Naval Architecture.

Darshan Chandarana salesforceDarshan Chandarana, Global Lead, Financial services Strategy, Salesforce: Darshan has worked on both sides of the table – as buyer and seller of technology and solutions in the Financial services industry and is well placed to comment on the significant changes in approach to technology that have taken place in the industry over the past decade. He currently leads the Global Financial Services Solutions team at Salesforce, where he is focused on transformational projects in Banking, Insurance & Capital Markets. Previously, he was a director in Oracle’s Cloud Computing Group, working on product strategy, development & solutions specifically for the Platform as a Service initiatives within Financial Services. Until 2008 he headed up the financial services product strategy team in London for BEA. Prior to this he worked for Bank of America, where he was responsible for various cash and treasury management products & technologies in Capital Markets.

People & Mobile – the key to Facebook’s future

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO and founder of Facebook, spoke at Tech Crunch Disrupt yesterday. Lots has been written already about the talk but we did think it was interesting to see the things he emphasised in his interview.

This is a Wordle of the 40 most commonly used words in Mark Zuckerberg’s talk at Tech Crunch Disrupt, September 2012.

Mark Zuckerberg Tech Crunch Disrupt Talk September 2012

Seems a pretty accurate reflection of the focus at Facebook at the moment.

Mobile is obviously key to the future success of the business though it might be a little disingenious to suggest that HTML5 has been a root cause of their problems. Most commentators seem to suggest that Facebook’s HTML issues come down to improper use of the technology. The super smart Aral Balkan summed this point of view up:

Notice how Zuck said their mistake was using HTML5, not abusing HTML to make native apps? HTML gets the blame, exactly as I predicted…

You can read an excellent, detailed, article by Aral Balkan on the subject of ‘Web or Native‘ in Smashing Mag.

So this is Mary Beth Turner, talking at the Making it Mobile Forum in March of this year about the FT.com’s HTML5 proposition…

No-one has scaled HTML5 technology to the extent that Facebook wanted to, but the number of companies in the world that have the potential to do so are obviously limited. That doesn’t mean it isn’t possible, you need to use the technology in the way it was intended.

How Patrick McKenzie made $1,000,000 for someone he hadn’t met

The Business Of Software – Guest Post from Patrick McKenzie, (@Patio11)

This is taken, with permission, from Patrick McKenzie’s email newsletter – you should sign up here for it.

Hiya guys! Patrick (patio11) here. You signed up for periodic emails from me about making and selling software.

I’ve got a confession to make — I wanted to be a stand-up comedian when I was younger. This might seem like a curious career choice for someone with near pathological shyness and, at the time, a bit of a speech impediment, but nobody has ever accused me of being practical.

I finally got my chance at Business of Software, a software conference. There’s a video of it. It’s 7.5 minutes, and (in addition to having an important message for your software company) it is probably the funniest I’ll ever be. Go watch it. I’ll wait.

Why BoS Is My Favorite Software Conference

The speakers at BoS are typically incredibly bright luminaries in our industry, and they often have very inspirational stories mixed with very actionable advice for businesses, particularly businesses which are looking to take things to the next level. (I took, literally, ten thousand words of notes when I attended in 2010.) That’s not just wishy-washy verbiage, either: discussions at BoS were key in helping me to decide to launch a second software product (and kicking me in the butt enough to get me to actually do it — I launched 6 weeks after the conference), informing my decision to not take capital at the time, etc etc. It was enormously helpful to meet folks who have been down most of the roads I was interested in walking — their advice was priceless.

The speakers aren’t even the best reason to go — the caliber of attendee is absolutely outstanding. There are workshops and mixers with other attendees, but I got most value out of the “hallway track”, informal conversations over breakfast and lunch. I’m not speaking this year, but I’m going, for the simple reason that there’s no better place to be. Next to many of the attendees at the conference, I’m a featherweight, both in terms of success and expertise. (Last time I think I ended up eating lunch next to someone who bootstrapped a business building nuclear power plant control software. Yeah. Somewhat shockingly, we both had similar problems — to a degree — and both had decent advice for each other.)

My Only Presentation That’s Ever Made Anyone A Million Bucks

After the above bit of improvisational comedy, I was invited back to BoS in 2011. I delivered a fairly comprehensive hour-long discussion on A/B testing, funnel analytics, and first-run experience design.

BoS asks people for their key takeaway every year. As a result of this presentation and two others which touched on A/B testing, roughly 10% of the attendees mentioned A/B testing. (One of them wrote, direct quote, “Hire Patrick McKenzie to do my A/B testing” — that might have happened, not sure, since it was anonymous. Still, nice to be recognized.)

One attendee mailed me after the conference to say that they were convinced to start A/B testing. Without quoting any particulars, let’s say he was a CEO who founded a B2B software company, grew it from nothing to a very substantial size. True to his word, he sent me an update some weeks later, driven to despair by doing A/B testing… because it taught him in weeks that much of what he thought he knew after ten years was wrong.

He subsequently dried his tears on the million dollars in added sales. A/B testing: start. Seriously.

You can watch the entire presentation (1 hour) and read the transcript over on the BoS site. If you’re on this list, it is highly relevant to you. I actually don’t think that is my best presentation ever, but I can’t argue with the results people have gotten from applying the advice.

Come to the Business of Software Conference

I’m not speaking at BoS this year, but I’m flying 20 hours (on my own nickle!) to attend this October 1st through 3rd. Why? Because the last two years have been huge, huge wins for me. If it is at all feasible for you to come as well, I highly recommend it. The lineup of speakers this year is fantastic as always, and I anticipate it being a wonderful event.

Since I was previously a speaker, they gave me a discount code to share with you, for 20% off of whatever the current price is. It is, naturally, patio11. You can buy your tickets on their website.

I don’t have any ulterior motive in suggesting you go — no kickback or anything. The only reason I was sufficiently moved to send you what is, frankly, a sales pitch is that BoS has been such an epic win for me. I hope to see you there.

Until next time.

Regards,

Patrick McKenzie

P.S.

What happened to the course on lifecycle emails, you ask? Answer: it got delayed, because my video editor had his Macbook die on him. Luckily, the footage and everything is safe (thank you, Dropbox) but the actual rendering apparently is going to take a while. I’ll keep you posted.
