Thank you EU – a mayor from Greece meets a mayor from Spain.

Some years ago a small rural town in Spain twinned with one similar in Greece. The Mayor of the Greek town visited his new Spanish twin.

When he saw the palatial mansion belonging to the Spanish mayor he wondered how he could afford such a house. The Spaniard said, “You see that bridge over there? The EU gave us a grant to build a four-lane bridge, but by building a single lane bridge with traffic lights at either end this house could be built”.

So it was that the following year the trip was reciprocated and the Spanish mayor visited Greece. He was simply amazed at the Greek Mayor’s house with its gold taps, marble floors, jacuzzi and pool; it was simply marvellous. “How can you afford this?” he asked. The Greek replied; “You see that bridge over there?” The Spaniard replied, “No”.

(Thanks Francis Charig for sharing).

Astonishing motivational techniques for sales people. Is this the world’s worst sales conference?

We are looking for a decent event management software solution and one of the companies we are considering is Cvent. Then I discovered this. I am not sure I could do business with a company that runs sales meeting like this. I would just be supporting their crass habit.

Watch, wonder and learn. Be appalled. Do not copy at home or in the office.

Cvent sales conference - link to working video

(Please note there have been some problems with the YouTube version of this video but fortunately it seems to be widely distributed on the web so this may link to a different version).

Some highlights:

  • Poor event management staff having to clap all the sales people as they walk into the room. Check.
  • Bullshit words coming up on screens to motivate – ‘believe’, ‘imagine success’, ‘energy’, ‘Own it’, ‘Solve’, ‘Lead’, Deliver’ etc. Check.
  • Corporate songs. Check.
  • Men with beards dressed as women as humour. Check.
  • Belief the company has really, ‘changed the game’. Check.
  • ‘Finny’ videos put together by inmates employees. Check.
  • Some amazing quotes. Check.
  • “We’re all entrepreneurs here. This is called intrapreneurs.”
  • “Just give a damn, don’t admire your shot, keep those funnels tight, if you email me I’ll forward to the team.”
  • “You know there are only a handful of companies that people correlate to. I believe that Cvent has the legs to be one of those that you will brand yourself for life as a Cventer.”

Looking for a new supplier can be challenging, especially when you have to start talking to sales people who have no idea or interest in what you do which is one of the reasons that the internet is such a wonderful thing – you often don’t need to talk to a person and any company that doesn’t get its web presence right is at a serious disadvantage as compared to those that can both get you to their site and explain what they can do or you clearly. If companies make this sort of stuff searchable on the internet, I must confess it makes me less likely to buy their stuff, not more, no matter how good their product.

When it comes to motivating salespeople. I find Gareth Cheesman is my man every time.

Anyone got any favourite sales motivation they want to share?

US smartphone penetration to hit 50% by middle of next year

Nice analysis of evolving US mobile landscape from Asymco.

Some of the numbers are staggering – approximately 650,000 users switched from a non-smart to smart phone every WEEK in September 2011.

While reports of the imminent death of RIMM seem to be a little exaggerated the most notable thing is the inexorable rise of Android.

US Phone platform installed base November 2011

Asymco says that using trailing numbers, the 50% mark will be reached by next September but that as the switch is accelerating, it is likely to be earlier. Thought provoking stuff if you don’t have a mobile strategy because that is just for people with iPhones.

5 reasons Michael Sliwinski of Nozbe enjoyed Business of Software

Everyone takes something different from an event but I think Michael Sliwinski of Nozbe sums up some of the reasons that  Business of Software worked for him really nicely. Here is a summary of his thoughts, you can read more on his blog post.

“Listening to speakers and getting inspired
I’ve listened to talks about disruption, creativity, A/B testing, mistakes, successes, pricing, social media… etc… and as I listen to each talk my mind keeps spinning and getting new ideas for the stuff I’d love to do, ideas I’d want to implement in my company and improvements I’d love to build into Nozbe
“Re-discovering ideas all over again
Later I get to exchange these ideas with other folks and talk about stuff… and it makes even more sense. Wow, I’ve got seriously so much stuff I want to do/improve right now in the way I’m doing business and software. My CTO should be scared 🙂
“Geeks are not introverts
Contrary to the popular opinion geeks are not as introverts as you’d think – especially for a person like me who works from home – I love to meet new people and exchange ideas. And I found out that people who attend such events are like this, too – we are here to meet and talk. Especially with think-a-likes it’s so great to have a chat and just walk over to someone and start a conversation.
“One-track-conferences rock
I went to several conferences this year and I seriously prefer one-track conferences. When there are more tracks, more people wander around between these and many folks end up chatting on the corridor not deciding which room to visit. Not on “Business of Software” – over here there is only one track and it’s jammed packed as there is only the one place we can go to listen to the speakers. And later when there are breaks, we can discuss what we just heard with anyone… as everyone was there.
“And my personal bonus – I got to meet Nozbe users 🙂
There is nothing like talking to someone and when they ask what you do for a living someone else comes over and starts explaining what you do and why you do it and that they love your software. It happened to me today and I was blown away. Thanks Kevin for making my day and being a fantastic Nozbe evangelist!” Read more on his blog post

Thanks Michael, nice post and interesting feedback.

Where you there? What did you think? How can we make it better?

Barry Houlihan, CEO, MIG – Monetising Broadcast Media

We are delighted that Barry Houlihan, CEO/Founder, Mobile Interactive Group (MIG) will be speaking at the forthcoming BLN CEO Tales (8th December 6pm-9pm, London). Barry will talk about building platforms to drive interactivity and engagement on a global scale. MIG has had a lot of exciting developments in 2012 – from partnerships with Facebook, Skype, ITV and Sky through to acquiring mobile payments company, Zaypay, and digital technology agency, Digital Jigsaw.

MIG is probably the most active entrepreneurial business driving broadcasters and media providers to build interactivity and relationships with their audiences. Most importantly, MIG know how to monetise this content. Below is a video of Barry’s talk from the BLN MiM Forum 2011 about monetising broadcast media – it’s definitely worth a watch.

Even better is to meet and see Barry talk in person at CEO Tales. There is a small charge to attend this event. As ever, we offer a no questions asked refund policy if you attend and feel it wasn’t worth it.

Register for CEO Tales, 8th December, London. Guest speakers - Barry Houlihan, CEO, MIG; Peter Bauer, CEO, Mimecast in London, United Kingdom on Eventbrite

My business hero of the week for doing the right thing – Michael Woodford

Thank you Michael Woodford, for a short time CEO of Olympus before he was sacked, not for screwing an employee, not for raiding the company pension scheme, not for losing a ton of shareholder’s money, not for being discovered with his hands in the till but for DOING THE RIGHT THING, not the easy thing.

When he was made CEO of Olympus he discovered a gigantic pile of financial turds in the bottom drawer of a desk in the no doubt very elegant executive boardroom. He started to ask questions. Uncomfortable questions that called into question the honesty and probity of the board of a Japanese icon. He was sacked for being a, ‘high-handed’ manager. Things got pretty bad and he sought police protection.

Now it turns out that Olympus had been involved in the creation of one gigantic tobashi scheme. (See the basic deal in this FT article but bottom line, looks like it is a pretty straightforward case of fraud for whatever reason).

He could have gone quietly. He could probably have organised to leave with a very nice pay off for keeping the hell quiet. He chose the road less traveled too often in business. He investigated and looked for answers and when he didn’t get answers he blew the whistle.

Unbelievably, Shuichi Takayama, the Olympus President, while calling some of the extraordinary shenanigans, ‘highly inappropriate’, said this week that Michael Woodford was unsuited to run the company and wrong to make the company’s problems public.

Michael Woodford while CEO at Olympus

Michael Woodford, thank you for making people believe that ethics, honesty and doing the right thing still play a major part in the way that some people go about their lives at the top in business.

The night before the big interview, Balsamiq’s Peldi is worried…

One of my favourite BoS2011 moments came from the interview between the CEO and founder of Balsamiq, Peldi, and John Nese, the founder of Soda Pop Stop.

To find out a bit more about John Nese and why we wanted to get him along, you should watch this…

This is Peldi and co-conspirator, Marco, the night before the interview. Balsamiq’s Peldi gets stressed to the max while preparing the night before his interview with John Nese of Soda Pop Stop. Marco plays the role of John. Peldi, as usual, is worried.

Warning, contains no bad language but there is much giggling.

You can see some of the pictures from the real interview here: http://www.flickr.com/groups/bos2011/

It would be fair to say that none of their worries were realised!

A brilliant little idea to make the world suck less with software just got actioned

It is possible that you read this site from time to time and weren’t aware that we were in Boston running Business of Software last week – pictures. Alexis Ohanian, founder of Reddit, Hipmunk and Breadpig amongst other things offered to give away a Macbook Air to the person who tweeted the best idea to make the world #suckless using software.
Alexis Ohanian talks about Bill Gates making a metric fuck tonne of money so much he could ski down a pile of it and then deciding to do good things with it at BoS2011
We had several hundred entries in less than 24 hours. The guy who was having a bad week and felt a Macbook Air would cheer him up didn’t win. The guy making Oracle databases talk to each other a bit faster didn’t win. The winning tweet didn’t want the Macbook Air and the second place didn’t want or need it either. That story here: Alexis Ohanian’s #Suckless #BoS2011 challenge winner
I couldn’t have hoped or imagined for a better, more kick ass outcome. Here is the email I got today.

“Hello Mark & Alexis,

I spoke with Brent Conway the principal of the Melrose Lincoln School – he was very excited and supportive – the project is underway! We will run the Lincoln School Computer Club on Friday Mornings at 7:30am before school for ~20 weeks.

We’re offering the Programming Class to the Fifth Graders at the Lincoln School – we’re going to start with 8 kids. See the attached document which went home in backpacks & as an email to request student applications. We’re planning  finalize the student list by November 15th – 2011.

I’m going to start the kids off with SCRATCH from MIT – http://scratch.mit.edu/ because it is easy for kids to see results and get engaged.  Then move them over to simple iOS games iPhone & iPad.

We’ll be highlighting our accomplishments at the Lincoln School STEM Night (Science Technology Engineering & Math) at the End of the Year Assembly.

Thanks very much for your support! I’ll keep you updated on our progress.

Yours,

Noel W. Clarke (Babson MBA ’09)
