Perspectives on the wonderful world of tech

The Baz & Daz show finds a new home at Pinsent Masons

Pleased to hear that Barry Vitou and Danvers Baillieu, those tweet-crazy, social media levering, early-stage cheerleaders of the London tech scene have left wherever they were before and have moved to Pinsent Masons to play a leading role in their technology practice.

A few things set the pair apart:

  • Their peculiarly hard to spell (for me anyway) French sounding surnames belie their status as true English gentlemen.
  • They set up Bootlaw, the legal bootcamp for startups.
  • They were some of the first lawyers I know to use Twitter and they are actually pretty good at it. (In fact the pair are such a double act that they even seem to have about the same number of Twitter numbers):

We like Barry and Danvers and are excited about their move. It was only a matter of time before their enthusiasm for startups and early stage businesses was going to mean they would find a new home in a firm that had more corporate interest in the early stage technology space. Winston and Strawn are a class act but their expertise is primarily in working with much larger US corporates which must have been unbelievably tedious for two go-getting enthusiasts.

Congratulations Pinsent Masons on landing a couple of top guys who have made a lot of friends in the startup world. We look forward to seeing what they do next.

BLN, Boston and the Business of Software

I wrote recently about the conference I most enjoyed attending last year – Business of Software.

I have known the organiser, Neil Davidson, for many years. Neil’s day job is running Red Gate Software which he and his co founder Simon Galbraith are continuing to build to ever greater  heights. I got talking to him after the event in Boston. He wasn’t sure whether he had the time to manage BoS as both it and Red Gate took off. He wasn’t sure if he was going to run it again as he wasn’t sure if he had the time to dedicate to it and didn’t want to compromise on the quality. I sympathised completely but felt it would be almost criminal for such an important event to just disappear.

The upshot is…

We are delighted that we have agreed to work with Neil on the management and development of the conference from 2011. He, and the Business of Software community have created and built an extraordinary thing. We don’t want to change a winning formula – quality people from sustainable software businesses from around the world come to meet their peers, exchange ideas and listen to amazing speakers.

We do want to be build on the success of the past four events and find ways of sharing the knowledge and expertise of the participants at this special event with a wider audience. Check in at http://businessofsoftware.org/ and register for conference updates. We will be reaching out to previous attendees for thoughts on things we can do to build on the event in the future. Please talk to us!  Tickets will be on sale from mid February.

I want to take a moment to say a huge, ‘Thank you’, to Neil, on behalf of everyone that has been involved in Business of Software in the past. You have inspired, and will continue to inspire, a tribe. Thank you for an extraordinary opportunity.

The event will be held in Boston between October 24th-26th 2011 at the World Trade Center.

What Russian entrepreneurs make of Cambridge and the UK.

With all the excitement about Yuri Milner’s extraordinary move to invest $150,000 in convertible loans to each Y-Combinator winner in the US, it would be easy to forget that the Russian entrepeneurial ecosystem is only just emerging. We were privelidged to play host to five companies that came over to the UK last week with the Russian Venture Company to meet entrepreneurs, investors, advisers and companies who might be able to help them develop their businesses in the UK. We also put them through a mini-Springboard for two days courtesy of Jon Bradford.

Thanks to everyone involved in hosting, meeting, mentoring, tutoring, listening and advising. It was great to see so many people from the UK get involved and we were delighted to hear that so many of the investors and advisers that did get involved ended up with tangible opportunities as a result.

We ran a competition over the week for the clumsiest Russian to English  translation. Our two favourites were:

  • Some small present back – bribe.
  • Low cost peoples – the working class.

For a sense of what the Russian entrepreneurs thought of the week, and of the UK in general, check out Evgeny Kozlov’s Twitter stream. Evgeny was one of the entrepreneurs on the trip and runs a biotechnology business, a mobile phone business and a social media business. He has over 80,000 Twitter followers that received his stream of Tweets back to Moscow and beyond. I ran the stream through Tweetdeck translate.

I put some of the Tweets I like best in bold.

The conference I enjoyed most in 2010.

We run about 30 events a year in the UK and we like to think we do a pretty good job of delivering good ones. We would love to think this is because we are amazing but the reality is this is simply because we try to make sure we have amazing people participate.

Quality not quantity is key. More value is created by having 18 amazing people in a room of 20, than it is to have 100 amazing people in a room of 200.  The truth for us though is that while we enjoy the events we run, we don’t get to enjoy them as participants, as delegates, as fact sponges, because we want to make sure that our guests get the most out of them.

Of the events I have attended  in the last few years, (some extraordinary fora including TED Global), Business of Software in Boston last year was stand out awesome.

A few things really made it stand out.

  • It was an event aimed at owners and founders of profitable, growing software businesses but it did not spend the entire time considering either (a) code or (b) how to get venture funding in 6 weeks to sell to Google in 18 months.
  • The speakers, most of whom spoke for an hour, were incredible. Most of them stayed for the entire event, not because they felt they had to but because they wanted to. (One speaker told me that he had been to two previous Business of Software events as a delegate. Being asked to speak felt like a huge honour and a huge responsibility).
  • Seth Godin, Joel Spolsky, Dharmesh Shah, Eric Ries, Peldi, Derek Sivers, Jason Cohen, Dan Bricklin… Not all of the speakers are household names but they all had compelling stories to tell, points to make and ideas to action. See my index and notes here:https://thebln.com/2010/10/organised-notes-index-of-business-of-software-2010-talks/
  • The participants were open and engaged. With a maximum capacity of 320 people, it was easy to catch up with the people you wanted to connect with.
  • The conference is not cheap but many people I met had gladly spent their entire annual travel/conference budget to be there.

It was two and a half days of laid-back but high-energy, high-quality, collaborative, friendly, networking, listening and talking to some of the most extraordinary people on the software planet. It is the sort of event that people love getting involved in.

The difference between passion and money

If you know someone that has been given, or earned, or won, a lot of money, you might feel a bit jealous.

BUT:

If you know someone that is, or has become, hugely passionate about something, you are likely to get excited for them. You don’t feel jealous, you feel passionate too.

Money is finite, passion is viral.
