MiM 2012: The British are a nation of interacters. Great news for mobile.

Ann Cook delivers some fantastic stats about the British nation and their willingness to interact with content on the telly:

  • 14.9 million individuals interacted with ITV last year
  • 6.5 million of these individuals interacted using mobile and this figure is constantly growing
  • Currently, 60% of all interactions with ITV happen on mobile. This figure rises up to 80% for shows attracting younger audiences like X-Factor.

But what does all this mean for you? Peoples’ willingness to interact means that your audience no longer just wants to consume the content you provide them. They want to express opinions, vote, enter competitions – be part of the content themselves.

It therefore no longer makes sense to regard people as viewers, but rather as sources of data. By interacting with content people you give details of their preferences, opinions, location and propensity to spend. Analysing this data and optimising accordingly can help you increase revenue. Ann Cook did this and increased revenue by 20%. Need we say anymore?

And that is what Making it Mobile is about – real, commercial opportunities that you can implement in your organisation now. Meet with other business leaders, share ideas and learn in content-rich, peer-to-peer environment. We want all participants to leave with at least one actionable idea for their organisations and the contacts to make it happen.

Top 100 European Software Companies Revenue up 20% in year

The top 100 European Software companies in the Truffle Partners 7th Annual Report, ‘European software vendors ranking 2012‘, revenues have grown an average of 20% in the year since its last report was produced to 37.2 €B for Truffle 100 in 2012. Revenue was concentrated in the larger businesses though with 76% of revenues derived from the Top 25 companies, up from 63 % last year.

Germany, home of SAP, dominates the list of countries by revenue, accounting for 49% of the revenue of all companies in the 100. The list of companies with six; SAP, Dassault Systemes, Sage UK, Wincor Nixdorf, Hexagon achieving sales of over €1 billion per annum. Only 2 out of 5 companies has sales of over €100 million Euros however and this poses serious questions about the ability of technology companies in Europe to scale.

“If the Truffle 100 was just one company it would not be as big as Microsoft MSFT, and its growth is no faster. We are not closing the gap.

“If you compare the size of the industry in Europe compared to GDP, and compare it with the U.S., Europe [industry] should be five or six times bigger. There is a lack of support in most geographies. France is an example, but it is not alone.” Bernard-Louis Roques, Managing Partner, Truffle Partners quoted in Ben Rooney, Wall Street Journal.

MiM 2012: Six golden rules for innovation in the mobile space

Ross Sleight of Somo has six golden rules for companies wanting to innovate in the mobile space, and he wants you to know about them. In this talk he explains why simply leveraging the technical features of mobile is not enough – you’ve got to build something that helps a consumer be better at something they already do. Flirting, taking and sharing photos, socialising around big ‘watercooler’ TV events – these are some of the things consumers are doing better with mobiles, and which they are willing to pay money for. Ross explores how to identify these opportunities, monetise them and extend the market through partnering – that’s a lot to pack into ten minutes!

This talk was taken from our March edition of Making it Mobile. The Making it Mobile events are one day conferences for adopters of mobile to engage with disruptive businesses making mobile happen today. For the November edition we have lined up an exciting new programme of speakers who are integrating mobile into their business – find out more on the speakers and schedule here, or register for the event here.

MiM 2012: what do your customers do when you can’t see them?

Ever wondered what your customers do with your product when you’re not in the room? Chances are it a) won’t be what you expect and b) will be one of the most valuable things you can know.

In this talk from the March edition of MiM, Matt Gierhart from Ogilvy sheds a little light on consumer behaviour and talks about how to work with these behaviours to build something that makes customers awesome. It’s a big topic, so big that we have added in an extra session to the November edition of Making it Mobile to cover some of the great new work being done with insights into human behaviour.

Customer engagement: think you’re not involved? You’re wrong.

Running the MiM Award over the past couple of weeks has been like throwing a fancy dress party. We’ve issued the invitations, ordered the beer, and now old friends and new are getting in touch. ‘Shall I wear this?’, ‘Can I invite Sarah, she wants to come as a penicillin molecule?’

In particular, I’ve had a number of conversations with people who don’t think they have a customer engagement costume. Of course, they do: let me say up front that anyone who is building tools that help businesses communicate with customers, at any time, in any location, is involved in customer engagement.

PWC’s Trendsetter Barometer is quite clear about the scope of what is being done at the moment – 47% of companies surveyed are using mobile and social media channels for some form of customer outreach. Right now, popular applications include better targeted marketing campaigns, word of mouth promotions, and customer feedback for product development.

Of course, this is just a snapshot of what is popular now. The unique ability of mobile devices to be always present and always useful throughout a customer’s day means there are thousands of opportunity to improve customer engagement in ways which are not even mentioned here, and the MiM Award is designed to pick out great ideas that help companies do that.

For inspiration, our good friends at Twilio have some great case studies on the use of mobile throughout the customer engagement cycle, for example:

So, to summarise: if your business helps enterprises use mobile tools to communicate with their customers, or serve their customers more efficiently, then it’s in customer engagement. Hope that’s clear: just don’t ask us about the dress code for MiM, unless you want to come as a penicillin molecule.

MiM 2012: Ready, Fire, Aim. Domino’s Pizza on learning by doing.

Colin Rees, the IT manager at Domino’s Pizza, has an amazing success story – £1m of pizza sales per week through mobile apps speaks very loudly indeed. And how did they manage to delight customers so well? They ask, they listen and they iterate. Rapidly.

Colin talks about the upfront investment needed (‘we didn’t spend much time – any time at all – building a business case’) and the challenges of learning by doing. It’s inspiring stuff.
